Measuring Your Screen: How to Convert cm to Inches

When looking for a new TV wall mount or checking if a new monitor fits your workspace, you often run into a problem: you've measured the space in centimeters, but manufacturers list screen sizes in inches. To convert your screen from cm to inches, you need to understand how screen diagonals are measured.

Step-by-Step: How to Measure Screen Diagonal Correctly

The manufacturer's specification (e.g., "65-inch TV" or "27-inch monitor") always refers exclusively to the screen diagonal. Follow these steps to measure accurately:

  1. Use the right tool: It is best to use a soft measuring tape. A rigid wooden or metal ruler can easily scratch the sensitive display.
  2. Find the measuring points: Place the tape exactly in the bottom-left corner of the visible image and pull it tight diagonally to the top-right corner.
  3. Measure only the glass: Very important: Only measure the actual display area (the panel). Exclude the outer frame or bezel of the housing!

The result you read is your exact screen diagonal in centimeters. To calculate cm to inches for your screen, simply divide this value by 2.54. (Or save yourself the math and use our calculator at the top of this page).

Why the Diagonal Can Be Deceiving: Bezels & Housing

A common mistake when discussing screen inches to cm is ignoring the housing. For example, a typical 65-inch TV has a pure screen diagonal of approx. 165 cm and a width of approx. 144 cm. However, the actual width on your wall depends heavily on the manufacturer's design.

Modern OLED TVs or frameless gaming monitors often have tiny edges of only a few millimeters. Older LCD models, however, can have significantly wider bezels. Always keep this in mind when planning precise placement near cabinets or windows. Our chart below provides standard reference values for pure display areas.

Expert Tip for Wall Mounts

The screen size alone does not determine which mount fits your TV. The decisive factors for safe mounting are the standardized VESA pattern (the hole spacing on the back of the TV) and the maximum weight capacity of the mount.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. How do I measure the screen size correctly?+
Always measure the screen diagonal from one corner to the opposite corner (e.g., bottom-left to top-right). Important: Measure only the visible glass, not the housing frame! Divide the result in cm by 2.54 to get the value in inches.
2. Are the dimensions in the table exact?+
The dimensions in the table are pure panel dimensions (screen area) in 16:9 format. Every TV has an additional bezel. On modern devices, this is very thin (0.5 - 1.5 cm per side); on older devices, it is wider. To be safe, always add 2-3 cm to the width and height.
3. What is the ideal viewing distance?+
For modern 4K/UHD TVs, the rule of thumb is: Screen diagonal x 1.5. For a 65-inch TV (approx. 165 cm diagonal), the ideal distance is about 2.50 meters. This provides an immersive experience without seeing individual pixels.
4. What does VESA stand for?+
VESA stands for "Video Electronics Standards Association." It is the international standard for the mounting holes on the back of a screen. A value like "VESA 400x200" means the holes are 400mm apart horizontally and 200mm vertically.
